Why oppose drug patents?

Patient groups, academics, public interest lawyers and activists have all spent years identifying ways to overcome patent barriers in a bid to enable access to affordable medicines for millions of people in the developing world. But why challenge the granting of patents?

Patents are by no means the only barrier to accessing life-saving medicines, but they play a significant, even determinant, role in blocking generic competition – and it is generic competition that is the most sustainable way of bringing down the price of medicines.
